See How The Historian's Apprentice Works!

Tackling Historical Questions

Students follow a five-step process that simulates the experience of being a historian:

  1. Reflect on your prior knowledge of the topic.
  2. Apply habits of historical thinking to the topic.
  3. Interpret the relevant primary sources.
  4. Assess the interpretations of other historians.
  5. Interpret, debate and write about the topic yourself.

Interacting with Primary and Secondary Sources

Students learn about the differences between primary and secondary sources and analyze groups of both kinds of sources. Activities guide students in looking closely and thinking critically.
